Internet Child Safety25% of five-year olds use the Internet and preschool children are the fastest growing group online. Children between the ages of 6 and 17 are on the Internet at home for an average of 3 hours each day. When the amount of time spent on the Internet at school or in the local library is considered, children today are logging on more often and for longer periods of time than ever. Many of us parents are dealing with the problem of having children who are far more knowledgeable about computers and the internet than we are. So how can these parents protect our children from all of the dangers that are lurking on the internet? Knowledge is the key. This site will help you understand how to protect your kids on the internet. I'll give you talking points, tools to consider and tips for your kids. Together we can keep our children safe on the internet.Internet Child Safety TipsKids: Never give out personal information - not even what school you go to. Even giving out small bits of information over time can be very dangerous. To illustrate read the following well known true story. Kids: Never arrange to meet someone in person that you've chatted with online. Kids: Never give out your password to anyone except your parents - not even your best friend. Kids: Remember - that kid you are chatting with might really be an older man pretending to be a child. Parents: Surf the net with your kids. Chat with the kids they are chatting with. Get to know them just as you would the children your kids play with. Parents: Show interest in what your child is doing on the internet. True interest - this will give you plenty of opportunities to give little reminders to your children on internet safety. Parents: Give your children clear rules on using the computer. What types of sites they can visit, how long they can spend on the computer, who they can email and chat with. Resources |
